On the authority of Safiyyah bint Abi Ubayd, from one of the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (may Allah be pleased with her), from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who said: "Whoever comes to a fortune-teller (arraf) and asks him about something, and believes him, his prayer will not be accepted for forty days." Reported by Muslim.

Safiyyah bint Abi Ubayd: the wife of Ibn Umar; her father Abu Ubayd is the son of Masud al-Thaqafi. "From one of the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)": in a narration in Muslim: from Hafsah bint Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both). A fortune-teller (arraf): he is one who claims to know the location of stolen goods and the like through means and premises by which he claims to know things; his practice may be called soothsaying (kihanah) because it resembles it. "His prayer will not be accepted": that is, he will have no reward in it, even though it discharges the obligation.

The prohibition of practicing fortune-telling (irafah) and making use of it. The prohibition of seeking the help of fortune-tellers and soothsayers to know some matter. Believing fortune-tellers nullifies the reward of righteous deeds, including the prayer, because it is a kind of polytheism (shirk) and apostasy from Islam, on account of the claim to knowledge of the unseen and the fabrication and lying in their words. A statement of the recompense of one who comes to a fortune-teller and asks him about something.
