عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رضي اللّه عَنْهَا قَالَتْ: وَاعَدَ رَسُولَ اللّه صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم جبْرِيلُ عَلَيْهِ السَّلامُ في سَاعَةٍ أنْ يأتِيَهُ، فَجَاءَتْ تِلْكَ السَّاعةُ ولم يأتِهِ، قَالَتْ: وَكَانَ بيَدِهِ عصًا، فَطَرَحَهَا مِنْ يَدِهِ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ: «مَا يُخْلِفُ اللّه وَعْدَهُ وَلا رُسُلُهُ» ثُمَّ الْتَفَتَ، فَإذا جِرْوُ كَلْبٍ تحْتَ سَريره. فَقالَ: «مَتَى دَخَلَ هذا الْكَلْبُ؟» فَقُلْتُ: وَاللّه مَا دَرَيْتُ بِهِ، فأمر به فَأُخْرِجَ، فَجَاءَهُ جبْرِيلُ عَلَيْهِ السَّلامُ: فَقَال رَسُولُ اللّه صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم: «وَعَدْتَني، فَجَلَسْتُ لكَ ولَم تَأتِني» فقالَ: مَنَعني الْكلْبُ الذى كَانَ في بيْتِكَ وإنَّا لا نَدْخُلُ بَيْتًا فِيهِ كَلْبٌ وَلا صورَةٌ» رواه مسلم.

Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: Jibril (peace be upon him) appointed with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) an hour in which he would come to him, but that hour came and he did not come to him. She said: He had a staff in his hand, and he threw it from his hand, saying: "Allah does not break His promise, nor do His messengers." Then he turned, and there was a puppy under his bed. He said: "When did this dog enter?" I said: By Allah, I did not know about it. So he ordered it and it was taken out. Then Jibril (peace be upon him) came to him, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You promised me, so I sat waiting for you, but you did not come to me." He said: "The dog that was in your house prevented me; we do not enter a house in which there is a dog or an image." Reported by Muslim.
