Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever eats garlic or onion, let him keep away from us," or "let him keep away from our mosque." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim). In another narration by Muslim: "Whoever eats onion, garlic, and leek, let him not come near our mosque, for the angels are harmed by what harms the children of Adam."

The dislike of a Muslim attending the congregational prayer as long as a strong odor emanates from him that harms those around him, whether from eating garlic, onion, or leek, or other foul-smelling things such as tobacco, until the odor departs; bearing in mind that tobacco, along with its foul smell, is forbidden because of its many harms and its well-known repugnance. Islam's keenness on people's mutual affection and on keeping away everything that would repel them or scatter their gatherings.
