Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) delivered a sermon one Friday and said in his sermon: "Then, O people, you eat two plants that I consider nothing but foul: the onion and the garlic. I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), when he found the smell of them on a man in the mosque, order that he be taken out to al-Baqiʿ. So whoever eats them, let him kill their [smell] by cooking." Reported by Muslim.

"That I consider (ma arahuma)": I do not deem them [to be anything but foul]. "Foul (khabithatayn)": that whose taste or smell is repugnant, such as garlic and onion. "Al-Baqiʿ": the cemetery of the people of Medina. "Let him kill them (fal-yumithuma)": that is, by removing their smell.

The prohibition of eating onion, garlic, and everything foul-smelling for one who intends to come to the mosque; the dislike is removed if they are eaten after being cooked and their smell has gone. Caring for the cleanliness of mosques is obligatory, along with choosing the finest garments when frequenting them and removing work clothes that give off foul odors; tobacco is measured against onion and garlic when the one addicted to it harms people with the smell of his mouth. Those in authority should oversee the mosques, attend to their cleanliness, and guide people toward that.
