عَنْ أَبي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللّه عَنْهُ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم يقُولُ: «الحَلِفُ منْفَقَةٌ للسِّلْعَةِ، مَمْحَقَةٌ للْكَسْبِ» متفقٌ عليه.
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Swearing makes merchandise sell, [but] it wipes out the earning." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).
الشرح · explanation
منفقة للسلعة: أي سبب نفاق البضاعة، أي رواجها وكثرة طلبها. ممحقة للكسب: أي سبب محق الربح، ونقصه وذهاب البركة منه.
"makes merchandise sell" (manfaqah lil-sil'ah): that is, a cause for the merchandise's marketability, its circulation, and the abundance of demand for it. "wipes out the earning" (mamhaqah lil-kasb): that is, a cause for the obliteration of the profit, its diminishment, and the departure of blessing from it.
