عَنْ أَبي هُرَيْرَةَ رضَيَ اللّه عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم: «لا تُسَمُّوا الْعِنَبَ الْكَرْمَ، فإِنَّ الْكَرْمَ المُسْلِمُ» متفقٌ عليه. وهذا لفظ مسلمٍ. وفي روَايةٍ: «فَإِنَّمَا الْكَرْمُ قَلْبُ المُؤْمِنِ» وفي رواية للبخاري ومسلِم: «يَقُولُونَ الْكرْمُ إِنَّمَا الْكَرْمُ قلْبُ المُؤْمِنِ»
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not call grapes al-karm (the vine of generosity), for al-karm is [rather] the Muslim." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim); this is the wording of Muslim. In another narration: "For al-karm is truly the heart of the believer." In a narration of al-Bukhari and Muslim: "They say al-karm; rather al-karm is the heart of the believer."
الشرح · explanation
فإن الكرم المسلم: أي إن المستحق للاسم المشتق من الكرم المسلم، ومثله: إنما الكرم قلب المؤمن.
"For al-karm is [rather] the Muslim": that is, the one deserving of the name derived from karm (generosity) is the Muslim; and likewise: "al-karm is truly the heart of the believer."

كراهة تسمية العنب كرمًا، ومن أسباب كراهة ذلك أن لفظة (الكرم) كانت العرب تطلقها على شجر العنب، وعلى العنب، وعلى الخمر المتخذة من العنب، سموها كرما لكونها متخذة منه، ولأنّها تحمل على الكرم والسخاء، فكره الشرع إطلاق هذه اللفظة على العنب وشجره؛ لأنّهم إذا سمعوا اللفظة ربما تذكروا بها الخمر، وهيجت نفوسهم إليها، فوقعوا فيها، أو قاربوا ذلك.
It is disliked to call grapes al-karm. Among the reasons for this dislike is that the Arabs used to apply the word al-karm to the grapevine, to grapes, and to the wine made from grapes—naming it karm because it is made from grapes and because it incites generosity (karam) and open-handedness. So the Sacred Law disliked applying this word to grapes and the vine, because when people heard the word they might be reminded of wine, and their souls would be stirred toward it, so they would fall into it or come close to that.
