عَنْ وَائِلِ بْنِ حَجرٍ رَضِيَ اللّه عَنْهُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم قَال: «لا تَقُولُوا: الْكَرْمُ، وَلَكِنْ قُولُوا: الْعِنَبُ، وَالحبَلَةُ» رواه مسلم.
Wa'il ibn Hujr (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not say al-karm; rather say the grapes (al-inab) and the vine (al-habala)." Reported by Muslim.

الحبَلَة: شجر العنب.

سبب كراهة إطلاق لفظ الكرم على العنب، لأنّه يعطيها شيئًا من المدح الذي هو من خصائص المسلم النقي. أنّ تسميتها بما لا مدح فيه لتأكيد ذمها وتحريمها، وأخبر أنّ قلب المؤمن لما فيه من نور الإيمان أولى بذلك الاسم.
The reason for disliking the application of the word al-karm to grapes is that it grants them a measure of praise that belongs to the qualities of the pure Muslim. Naming it with a term that carries no praise is to emphasize the censure of it [wine] and its prohibition; and he informed that the heart of the believer, on account of the light of faith within it, is more deserving of that name.
