Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Let not a woman be in [skin] contact with [another] woman and then describe her to her husband as though he were looking at her." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).
"Let her not be in contact (la tubashir)": let her not look at her nor touch her skin, so as to come to know the outward and hidden beauties she has. "As though he were looking at her": as if he were seeing her, on account of the precision of the description.

The prohibition of describing a woman to a man who is a stranger (non-mahram) to her, because describing is under the same ruling as looking and viewing; and it is forbidden for a man to look at and gaze upon a strange (non-mahram) woman. The wisdom behind the prohibition is the fear that the man to whom she is described will be captivated by the described woman, so his heart becomes attached to her and he falls into temptation; and the one describing her may be his own wife, as in the hadith, so this might lead him to divorce her, in which lies corruption whose outcome is not praiseworthy. It is not permissible to mention descriptions that provoke temptation regarding either sex, man or woman, in order to ward off corruption—except when it is for the purpose of marriage. Muslim women should be scrupulous and not uncover their charms, beauty, and adornment before women who are not scrupulous about mentioning their attractions to men.
