Riyad Al Salihin

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When a man calls his wife to his bed and she refuses, and he spends the night angry with her, the angels curse her until morning." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim). In another narration: "until she returns."

"His bed": that is, sleeping with him; it is also said it is a euphemism for intercourse. "She refuses (fa-abat)": she declines. "The angels curse her": they invoke against her expulsion from the mercy of Allah, Exalted is He, which is an expression of her deserving punishment. "Until morning (tusbih)": [until] she turns back from her refusal, as in the second narration; the expression "until morning" is based on the usual case that her being called to bed occurs at night.

The husband has rights over the wife that she is forbidden to refuse to fulfill; it is among the wife's duties to answer the husband's desire when he calls her to intimacy and enjoyment, whether intercourse or otherwise, and she may not be reluctant in that—except when she has an excuse such as illness, or is menstruating, or is engaged in an obligatory act of worship such as fasting Ramadan. If the wife refuses her husband's desire without an excuse, she deserves punishment and the angels' cursing of her, unless she complies; the apparent singling out of the night in the hadith is only to emphasize the obligation of compliance therein, since desire is stronger then. If the woman knows that her husband will not become angry at her refusal, the prohibition is lifted from her; but it is better to comply, for the sake of the continuance of marital companionship and to strengthen affection and mercy.
