عَنْ أبي هُريْرةَ رضي اللّه عنْهُ عن النَّبيِّ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم قَالَ: «بَيْنَ النَّفْخَتَيْنِ أرْبعُونَ» قَالُوا يا أبَا هُريْرةَ، أرْبَعُونَ يَوْمًا؟ قَالَ: أبَيْتُ، قالُوا: أرْبعُونَ سَنَةً؟ قَال: أبَيْتُ، قَالُوا: أرْبَعُونَ شَهْرًا؟ قَال: أبَيْتُ «وَيَبْلَى كُلُّ شَيءٍ مِنَ الإنْسَانِ إلّا عَجْبَ الذَّنَبِ، فِيهِ يُرَكَّبُ الْخَلْقُ، ثُمَّ يُنَزِّلُ اللّه مِنَ السَّمَاءِ مَاءً، فَيَنْبُتُونَ كَمَا يَنْبُتُ الْبَقْلُ» متفقٌ عليه.
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Between the two blowings (of the trumpet) is forty." They said: "O Abu Hurayrah, forty days?" He said: "I decline (to specify)." They said: "Forty years?" He said: "I decline." They said: "Forty months?" He said: "I decline. Everything of a person will decay except the tailbone (coccyx); from it creation will be reconstituted. Then Allah will send down water from the sky, and they will grow as vegetation grows." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

النفختين: نفخة الصعق ونفخة البعث. أبيت: أي امتنعت أن أجزم بتعيينها. عجب الذنب: العظم اللطيف الذي في أسفل الصلب وهو رأس العصعص، وهو الذي يبقى ليعاد تركيب الإنسان منه. البقل: كل نبات أخضر وليس بشجر.
"The two blowings": the blast of the swoon (death) and the blast of the resurrection. "I decline": that is, I refrain from affirming its specification. "The tailbone (ajb al-dhanab)": the small bone at the base of the spine, which is the tip of the coccyx; it is what remains so that the human being is reconstituted from it. "Herbage (baql)": every green plant that is not a tree.

That people perish after death except the tip of the coccyx, which does not perish. This is specific to other than the prophets, the martyrs, and those whose exception has been reported, for they do not perish. An explanation of the manner of resurrection; this is among the matters of the unseen, and Allah knows best the reality of how it will be.
