عَنْ أبي الفَضْل العبَّاسِ بنِ عَبْدِ المُطَّلِب رضي اللّه عَنْهُ قَالَ: شَهِدْتُ مَعَ رسُولِ اللّه صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم يَوْمَ حُنَين فَلَزمْتُ أنَا وَأبُو سُفْيَانَ بنُ الحارِثِ بنِ عَبْدِ المُطَّلِبِ رَسُولَ اللّه صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم لَمْ نفَارِقْهُ، ورَسُولُ اللّه صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم علَى بغْلَةٍ لَهُ بَيْضَاءَ فَلَمَّا الْتَقَى المُسْلِمُونَ وَالمُشْركُونَ وَلَّى المُسْلِمُونَ مُدْبِرِينَ، فَطَفِقَ رسُولُ اللّه صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم، يَرْكُضُ بَغْلَتَهُ قِبل الْكُفَّارِ، وأنَا آخِذٌ بِلِجَامِ بَغْلَةِ رَسُولِ اللّه صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم أَكُفُّهَا إرادَةَ أنْ لا تُسْرِعَ، وأبو سُفْيانَ آخِذٌ بِركَابِ رَسُولِ اللّه صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم: «أيْ عبَّاسُ نادِ أصْحَابَ السَّمُرةِ» قَالَ العبَّاسُ، وَكَانَ رَجُلًا صَيِّتًا: فَقُلْتُ بِأعْلَى صَوْتِي: أيْن أصْحابُ السَّمُرَةِ، فَواللّه لَكَأنَّ عَطْفَتَهُمْ حِينَ سَمِعُوا صَوْتِي عَطْفَةَ الْبقَرِ عَلَى أوْلادِهَا، فَقَالُوا: يا لَبَّيْكَ يَا لَبَّيْكَ، فَاقْتَتَلُوا هُمْ والْكُفَارُ، والدَّعْوةُ في الأنْصَارِ يقُولُونَ: يَا مَعْشَرَ الأنْصارِ، يا مَعْشَر الأنْصَار، ثُمَّ قُصِرَتِ الدَّعْوةُ عَلَى بنِي الْحَارِثِ بن الْخزْرَج، فَنَظَرَ رَسُولُ اللّه صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم وَهُوَ علَى بَغْلَتِهِ كَالمُتَطَاوِل علَيْهَا إلَى قِتَالِهمْ فَقَال: «هَذَا حِينَ حَمِيَ الْوَطِيسُ» ثُمَّ أخَذَ رَسُولُ اللّه صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم حصياتٍ، فَرَمَى بِهِنَّ وَجُوه الْكُفَّارِ، ثُمَّ قَال: «انْهَزَمُوا وَرَبِّ مُحَمَّدٍ» فَذَهَبْتُ أنْظُرُ فَإذَا الْقِتَالُ عَلَى هَيْئَتِهِ فِيما أرَى، فَواللّه ما هُو إلّا أنْ رمَاهُمْ بِحَصَيَاتِهِ، فَمَا زِلْتُ أرَى حدَّهُمْ كَليلًا، وأمْرَهُمْ مُدْبِرًا. رواه مسلم.

Abu al-Fadl al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I was present with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on the day of Hunayn. Abu Sufyan ibn al-Harith ibn Abd al-Muttalib and I kept close to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and did not leave him, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was on a white mule of his. When the Muslims and the polytheists met, the Muslims turned back in retreat, but the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) began urging his mule toward the disbelievers. I was holding the bridle of the Messenger of Allah's mule, restraining it so that it would not go fast, and Abu Sufyan was holding the stirrup of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Abbas, call out to the Companions of the Samurah (the acacia tree)!" Abbas—who was a man with a loud voice—said: So I called out at the top of my voice: "Where are the Companions of the Samurah?" By Allah, when they heard my voice, their turning back was like the turning of cows toward their calves. They said: "At your service! At your service!" So they fought the disbelievers. The call went out among the Ansar, who were calling: "O company of the Ansar! O company of the Ansar!" Then the call was confined to Banu al-Harith ibn al-Khazraj. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), on his mule, craned forward as if stretching out upon it, looking toward their fighting, and said: "This is when the battle has grown fierce." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took some pebbles and threw them at the faces of the disbelievers, then said: "They are defeated, by the Lord of Muhammad!" I went to look, and behold, the fighting was as it had been, as it seemed to me. But by Allah, no sooner had he thrown his pebbles at them than I continued to see their force blunted and their affair in retreat. Reported by Muslim.

الشرح · explanation

حنين: اسم مكان بقرب عرفة كانت فيه غزوة حنين بين المسلمين وبين هوازن في شوال سنة ثمان من الهجرة. يركض بغلته: يضربها ليستحثها على الإسراع. أصحاب السمرة: الصحابة الذين بايعوا رسول اللّه صَلّى اللّه عليه وسلّم في الحديبية سنة ست بعد الهجرة حين صدهم المشركون عن العمرة وتم بعد ذلك صلح الحديبية، وكانت تلك البيعة تحت الشجرة. عطفتهم: إقبالهم ورجوعهم. صيتًا: أي صاحب صوت عال يسمع من بعيد. عطفة البقر: فيه تشبيه سرعتهم في الرجوع واجتماعهم على النبي صلّى اللّه عليه وسلّم، بعطفة البقر على أولادها. الوَطِيسُ: التَّنُّورُ، ومَعْنَاهُ: اشْتَدَّتِ الْحرْبُ. حدَّهُمْ: أي بأسَهُمْ. كليلًا: ضعيفًا.

Hunayn: the name of a place near Arafah, where the Battle of Hunayn took place between the Muslims and Hawazin in Shawwal of the eighth year after the Hijrah. "Urging his mule (yarkud)": striking it to spur it to hasten. The Companions of the Samurah: the Companions who pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) at al-Hudaybiyah in the sixth year after the Hijrah, when the polytheists barred them from the ʿumrah, after which the Treaty of al-Hudaybiyah was concluded; that pledge was made beneath the tree. "Their turning (ʿatfatuhum)": their coming forward and returning. "Loud-voiced (sayyitan)": that is, possessing a loud voice heard from afar. "The turning of cows": in it is a likening of the swiftness of their return and their rallying to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to the turning of cows toward their calves. "Al-watis": the oven; its meaning is that the war has grown fierce. "Their force (haddahum)": that is, their might. "Blunted (kalilan)": weak.

ثبات رسول اللّه صَلّى اللّه عليه وسلّم، وشجاعته في الجهاد، وإكرام اللّه سبحانه له بالمعجزة بهزيمة الأعداء حين رماهم بكف من الحصباء. سرعة استجابة الصحابة رضوان اللّه تعالى عليهم لرسول اللّه صلّى اللّه عليه وسلّم حينما سمعوا صوت العباس يناديهم، إنّما كان فرار أكثرهم من مفاجأة أعدائهم لهم بالسهام وعدم توقعهم لهذه المباغتة، وكان تأديبًا من اللّه لهم بسبب اغترار بعضهم يومئذٍ بكثرتهم فقد كانوا اثني عشر ألفًا. القوة الحقيقية في الجهاد هو الإيمان باللّه تعالى وطلب النصر والعون من اللّه تعالى. على القادة أن يكونوا النموذج الصحيح في البطولة والشجاعة ليستجيب لهم الجنود في القتال والصمود في المعارك.

The steadfastness of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and his courage in jihad, and Allah's honoring him (Glorified is He) with the miracle of the enemy's defeat when he threw at them a handful of pebbles. The swiftness of the Companions' response (may Allah be pleased with them) to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when they heard the voice of Abbas calling them. The flight of most of them was only due to the sudden surprise of their enemies with arrows and their not anticipating this ambush. It was a discipline from Allah for them because some of them that day had been deluded by their large number, for they were twelve thousand. The true strength in jihad is faith in Allah the Exalted and seeking victory and aid from Allah the Exalted. Leaders must be the true example in heroism and courage so that the soldiers will respond to them in fighting and in standing firm in battles.
