Riyad Al Salihin

Umm al-Muʾminin Safiyyah bint Huyayy (may Allah be pleased with her) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was in iʿtikaf, so I came to visit him at night. I spoke with him, then I rose to return, and he rose with me to escort me back. Two men of the Ansar (may Allah be pleased with them both) passed by, and when they saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) they hastened on. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Slow down; she is Safiyyah bint Huyayy." They said: "Glory be to Allah, O Messenger of Allah!" He said: "Indeed, Satan runs through the son of Adam like the flow of blood, and I feared that he might cast something evil"—or he said: "something"—"into your hearts." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

Guarding against exposing oneself to suspicion, protecting against the plotting of Satan, and offering an excuse to clear oneself. Scholars, callers to Allah, and those taken as examples must guard against whatever would cause people to think ill of them—even if they are in the right—because doing so may become a cause for people to suspect them and nullify the benefit of their knowledge. The two men did not think ill of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), given what was established with him of the strength of their faith; but he feared for them that Satan might whisper that to them, since they are not infallible, and that this might lead them to ruin. So he hastened to inform them, cutting off the matter at its root and teaching those who come after him should the like befall them.
