Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) at a banquet, and the foreleg was raised to him, for it used to please him, and he took a bite from it. Then he said: "I am the master of mankind on the Day of Resurrection. Do you know why that is? Allah will gather the first and the last on a single plain, so that a caller can make them all hear and a viewer can see them all. The sun will draw near to them, and people will reach such distress and anguish as they can neither bear nor endure. People will say: 'Do you not see the state you are in, what has befallen you? Will you not look for someone to intercede for you with your Lord?' Some people will say to others: 'Go to your father Adam.' They will come to Adam and say: 'O Adam, you are the father of mankind. Allah created you with His hand, breathed into you of His spirit, and commanded the angels and they prostrated to you, and He settled you in Paradise. Will you not intercede for us with your Lord? Do you not see the state we are in, what has befallen us?' He will say: 'My Lord has become angry today with an anger the like of which He has never been angry before, and the like of which He will never be angry after; and He forbade me the tree, but I disobeyed. Myself, myself, myself! Go to someone other than me; go to Nuh.' So they will come to Nuh and say: 'O Nuh, you are the first of the messengers to the people of the earth, and Allah named you a grateful servant. Do you not see the state we are in? Do you not see what has befallen us? Will you not intercede for us with your Lord?' He will say: 'My Lord has become angry today with an anger the like of which He has never been angry before, and the like of which He will never be angry after. I had a supplication that I invoked against my people. Myself, myself, myself! Go to someone other than me; go to Ibrahim.' So they will come to Ibrahim and say: 'O Ibrahim, you are the Prophet of Allah and His close friend (khalil) from among the people of the earth. Intercede for us with your Lord. Do you not see the state we are in?' He will say to them: 'My Lord has become angry today with an anger the like of which He has never been angry before, and the like of which He will never be angry after. I told three lies. Myself, myself, myself! Go to someone other than me; go to Musa.' So they will come to Musa and say: 'O Musa, you are the Messenger of Allah. Allah favored you above the people with His messages and His speech. Intercede for us with your Lord. Do you not see the state we are in?' He will say: 'My Lord has become angry today with an anger the like of which He has never been angry before, and the like of which He will never be angry after. I killed a soul that I was not commanded to kill. Myself, myself, myself! Go to someone other than me; go to Isa.' So they will come to Isa and say: 'O Isa, you are the Messenger of Allah, and His word which He cast to Maryam, and a spirit from Him, and you spoke to people in the cradle. Intercede for us with your Lord. Do you not see the state we are in?' He will say: 'My Lord has become angry today with an anger the like of which He has never been angry before, and the like of which He will never be angry after'—and he mentioned no sin—'Myself, myself, myself! Go to someone other than me; go to Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).' So they will come to Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)." In another narration: "They will come to me and say: 'O Muhammad, you are the Messenger of Allah and the Seal of the Prophets, and Allah has forgiven you your former and latter sins. Intercede for us with your Lord. Do you not see the state we are in?' So I will set out and come beneath the Throne, and fall prostrate to my Lord. Then Allah will inspire me with such praises of Him and such beautiful commendation as He has not inspired anyone before me. Then it will be said: 'O Muhammad, raise your head. Ask, and you will be given; intercede, and your intercession will be accepted.' So I will raise my head and say: 'My community, O Lord! My community, O Lord!' It will be said: 'O Muhammad, admit into Paradise, through the right-hand gate of its gates, those of your community who have no account to render; and they are partners of the rest of the people in the remaining gates.'" Then he said: "By Him in whose hand is my soul, the distance between the two door-posts of the gates of Paradise is like the distance between Mecca and Hajar"—or "like the distance between Mecca and Busra." Agreed upon.
Da'wah: a meal, a banquet. Nahasa: he took a bite from it with the tips of his teeth. Sa'id: level ground, a plain. Tadnu: it draws near. Al-ghamm: grief. Al-karb: anguish, distress. "They prostrated to you": this was not a prostration of worship but a prostration of honoring and gratitude, for prostration in the sense of worship is only for Allah the Exalted alone. "The first of the messengers": perhaps meaning the first of them after the Flood. "I had a supplication": it is his saying, "Do not leave upon the earth any inhabitant from among the disbelievers." [Surah Nuh: 26] "I told three lies": they are his saying, "Indeed, I am sick," his saying, "Rather, this, the largest of them, did it," and his saying concerning Sarah, "She is my sister." In truth these are not acts of disobedience: he meant "I will become sick," and "the largest of them did it" (conditionally, if the idols can speak), and "my sister" meaning in Islam; but since they had the outward form of falsehood, he called them lies and counted them a sin. "You are His word": that is, you were created by His word, which is "Be." "A spirit from Him": that is, from His command. The Throne (al-Arsh): the Throne is the greatest of created things and their canopy; Allah knows best about it. "His praises (mahamiduhu)": extolling Him with His beautiful attributes. "The two door-posts (al-misra'ayn)": the two leaves or sides of the door. Hajar: a city in Bahrain. Busra: a city south of Damascus, in the Hawran.

The affirmation of the merit of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and the loftiness of his station with Allah the Glorified, and the affirmation of his intercession on the Day of Resurrection, and the severity of the standing upon the servants at the Gathering. The permissibility of seeking the intercession of the messengers on the Day of Resurrection. The attribution of sins to some of the messengers is not to be taken at face value; rather it is of the category of "the good deeds of the righteous are the shortcomings of those brought near." Otherwise the messengers (may Allah's blessings be upon them) are protected (ma'sum) from sins; what is attributed to them they did only through permissible interpretation and independent reasoning, and what they did was called a "sin" only in relation to the loftiness of their ranks with Allah the Exalted.
