عنْ ثوْبانَ رضِي اللّه عنْهُ قَال: كَانَ رسولُ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم إِذا انْصرفَ مِنْ صلاتِهِ، استَغْفَر اللّه ثَلاثًا وقَالَ: «اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ السَّلامُ، ومِنْكَ السَّلامُ، تَباركْتَ ياذَا الجلالِ والإِكْرامِ» قيلَ لِلأوزاعِيِّ وهُوَ أَحدُ رُوَاتِهِ: كَيْفَ الاسْتِغْفَارُ؟ قَال: يقُولُ: أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللّه، أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللّه. رواه مسلم .
Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) finished his prayer, he would seek Allah's forgiveness three times and say: "O Allah, You are Peace, and from You is peace. Blessed are You, O Possessor of Majesty and Honor." Al-Awza'i, one of its narrators, was asked: How is the seeking of forgiveness [done]? He said: One says: "I seek forgiveness from Allah, I seek forgiveness from Allah." Reported by Muslim.
الشرح · explanation
انصرف من صلاته: أي سلم وانصرف منها. أنت السلام: أنت مصدر السلام والأمان من كل نقص. يا ذا الجلال: يا صاحب العظمة المتنزهة عن النقائص. والإكرام: أوصاف الجمال من الكرم والعفو.
"Finished his prayer": that is, he made the concluding salam and turned away from it. "You are Peace": You are the source of peace and security from every deficiency. "O Possessor of Majesty": O Owner of greatness, transcendent above all deficiencies. "and Honor": the attributes of beauty, such as generosity and pardon.
