عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضي اللّه عنْهَا قَالَتْ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم يُكْثِرُ أَنْ يَقُولَ قَبْل موْتِهِ: «سُبْحانَ اللّهِ وبحمْدِهِ، أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللّه وأَتُوبُ إِلَيْهِ» متفقٌ عليه.
Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would frequently say, before his death: "Glory be to Allah and praise be to Him; I seek forgiveness from Allah and turn to Him in repentance." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

استحباب الازدياد من الخير أواخر العمر امتثالًا لقوله تعالى :فَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ وَاسْتَغْفِرْهُ ۚ إِنَّهُ كَانَ تَوَّابًا [سورة النصر: ٣] واقتداءً برسول اللّه صلّى اللّه عليه وسلّم. التوبة بعد الاستغفار تأكيد لمضمونه وإشارة إلى اعتبارها في حصول أثره.
The recommendation of increasing in good toward the end of one's life, in compliance with the words of Allah the Exalted: "So glorify the praise of your Lord and seek His forgiveness. Indeed, He is ever Accepting of repentance." [Surah al-Nasr: 3], and in emulation of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Repentance following the seeking of forgiveness is a confirmation of its content and an indication that it is taken into account in attaining its effect.
