On the authority of Abdullah ibn Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with both of them), who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say: "Three men from those who came before you set out on a journey until nightfall led them to seek shelter in a cave, which they entered. A boulder rolled down from the mountain and sealed the entrance of the cave. They said to one another: 'Nothing will save you from this boulder except that you supplicate to Allah the Most High through your righteous deeds.' One of them said: 'O Allah, I had elderly parents, and I would never give the evening milk to anyone before them -- neither family nor servants. One day, the search for pasture took me far away, and I did not return to them until they had fallen asleep. I milked their evening drink for them and found them sleeping. I disliked waking them, and I disliked giving the evening milk to anyone before them. So I stood waiting with the cup in my hand for them to awaken until the dawn broke, while my children cried at my feet from hunger. Then they awoke and drank their evening milk. O Allah, if I did that seeking Your countenance, then relieve us of what we are in from this boulder.' The boulder shifted slightly, but not enough for them to exit. The second one said: 'O Allah, I had a female cousin whom I loved as intensely as men can love women. I sought to have her, but she refused until she was afflicted by a year of hardship and came to me. I gave her one hundred and twenty gold coins on condition that she allow me to be with her, and she agreed. But when I was about to have her, she said: Fear Allah, and do not break the seal except through its rightful means. So I withdrew from her, even though she was the most beloved of people to me, and I left the gold I had given her. O Allah, if I did that seeking Your countenance, then relieve us of what we are in.' The boulder shifted further, but still they could not exit. The third one said: 'O Allah, I hired laborers and paid them their wages, except for one man who left without taking his pay. I invested his wages until they grew into great wealth. Then he came to me after a long time and said: O servant of Allah, give me my wages. I said: Everything you see is from your wages -- camels, cattle, sheep, and servants. He said: O servant of Allah, do not mock me! I said: I am not mocking you. So he took it all and drove it away, leaving nothing behind. O Allah, if I did that seeking Your countenance, then relieve us of what we are in.' The boulder rolled away completely, and they walked out." Agreed upon (narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim).

It is recommended to supplicate during times of distress and at other times as well. Seeking nearness to Allah the Most High is done through righteous deeds. The virtue of honoring one's parents, serving them, and giving them preference over one's own children and spouse. The encouragement to remain chaste from forbidden acts, especially after having the ability to commit them, and abandoning them for the sake of Allah the Most High. The virtue of fulfilling trusts and managing others' affairs with excellence. The supplication of one who turns to Allah the Most High with sincerity and devotion in times of hardship is answered, especially if he has a history of righteous deeds. Allah does not waste the reward of those who do good. The fruits of righteous deeds become apparent when a person falls into difficulties and tribulations, and Allah saves him from them.
