Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "The deeds of my Ummah, both good and evil, were presented before me. Among the good deeds I found the removal of harmful objects from the road. And among the evil deeds I found spittle left in the mosque without being buried." Narrated by Muslim.
"Were presented before me" means they were conveyed to me and made known to me, and the One who showed them to him was Allah, the Almighty. "Harmful objects" refers to anything that harms passersby, such as stones, thorns, or the like. "Removed" (yumat) means pushed aside, distanced, and cleared away. "Spittle" (al-nukha'ah or al-nukhamah) refers to mucus or phlegm that is spat out. "Not buried" means not cleaned up by burying it in the ground.

The paths of goodness are many, as even acts that people might consider insignificant — such as removing harmful objects from the road and cleaning spittle from the mosque — are counted among good deeds. Encouragement to do what benefits people and serves their interests, and to avoid everything that harms them or causes them harm. Removing harmful objects from the road is a form of charity, counted among the finest of deeds, and carries the reward of charity. It is obligatory to respect the mosques, maintain their etiquette, and refrain from doing anything unseemly within them. In the time of the Messenger (peace be upon him), the mosque floor was covered with small pebbles, so spittle would be buried in the soil. In our times, there is no soil, but if spittle is found, it should be wiped away with a tissue until it is removed. Spitting in the mosque is prohibited. Whoever spits in the mosque has sinned, and the expiation for it is to bury it — meaning if a person does so and wishes to repent, he should bury it. In our era, he should wipe it away with a tissue until it is gone.
