Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "When the Muslim — or believing — servant performs ablution and washes his face, every sin that he looked at with his eyes comes out with the water, or with the last drop of water. When he washes his hands, every sin that his hands committed comes out with the water, or with the last drop of water. When he washes his feet, every sin that his feet walked toward comes out with the water, or with the last drop of water, until he emerges purified of sins." Narrated by Muslim.
"Comes out from..." means his sins fall away because of the ablution — that is, they are forgiven. "Sin" (khati'ah) refers to a minor sin related to the rights of Allah, the Most High. "His hands committed" (batashat-ha yadahu) — batsh means a strong, forceful grasp — meaning his hands acquired those sins. "With the water" means as the water separates from the body.

The merit of ablution, and that regular performance of it is a means of purification from sins — this is a bounty from Allah, the Almighty. Two benefits are attained through ablution: the purification of the body from impurities and the purification of the soul from sins. If a Muslim were to contemplate during his ablution how his sins are washed away with the water, this would be a motivation for the presence of his heart and an increase in his faith.
