عن أبي هريرة رضي اللّه عنه قال: قال رسولُ اللّه صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم: «ألا أدلُّكُم على ما يَمْحُو اللّهُ بِهِ الْخَطايا، ويرْفَعُ بِهِ الدَّرجاتِ؟» قالوا: بلى يا رسُولَ اللّهِ، قال: «إسباغُ الْوُضوءِ على الْمَكَارِهِ وكَثْرةُ الْخُطَا إِلَى الْمسَاجِدِ، وانْتِظَارُ الصَّلاةِ بعْدِ الصَّلاةِ، فَذلِكُمُ الرِّبَاطُ» رواه مسلم.
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Shall I not guide you to that by which Allah erases sins and raises ranks?" They said: "Indeed, O Messenger of Allah." He said: "Perfecting the ablution despite difficulties, taking many steps to the mosques, and waiting for the next prayer after one has prayed. That is the ribat (guarding the frontiers of faith)." Narrated by Muslim.
الشرح · explanation
يمحو: يغفر. الدرجات: المنازل في الجنّة. إسباغ الوضوء: إعطاء كل عضوٍ حقّه من الطهارة، والإتيان بالوضوء كاملًا تامًّا. المكاره: هي ما يكرهه الإنسان ويشقّ عليه. الرِّباط: حبس النفس على الطاعة، وسمي انتظار الصلاة رباطًا، لأنّ فيه جهاد النفس وحبسها عن الشهوات.
"Erases" (yamhu) means forgives. "Ranks" (darajat) refers to the levels in Paradise. "Perfecting ablution" (isbagh al-wudu') means giving every limb its due share of purification and performing the ablution completely and thoroughly. "Difficulties" (al-makarih) refers to what a person dislikes and finds burdensome. "Ribat" means restraining the soul upon obedience. Waiting for the prayer is called ribat because it involves striving against the soul and restraining it from desires.

Encouragement to perfect one's ablution even in severe cold. The importance of maintaining the congregational prayer in the mosque. Giving proper attention to the prayers and not being preoccupied from them. The merit of taking many steps to the mosques, even if one's home is far away. The acts of worship mentioned in this hadith are means of forgiveness and drawing closer to Allah, the Almighty. What is mentioned in the hadiths regarding the expiation of sins pertains to the rights of Allah, the Most High. As for the rights of people, they must be fulfilled and returned to their rightful owners, or one must seek absolution and clearance from them.
