Riyad Al Salihin

Adiyy ibn Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I heard the Prophet (peace be upon him) say: "Guard yourselves against the Fire, even if by giving half a date in charity." Agreed upon (narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim). In another narration by both, he reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "There is none among you except that his Lord will speak to him, with no interpreter between them. He will look to his right and will see nothing but what he sent ahead; he will look to his left and will see nothing but what he sent ahead; and he will look in front of him and will see nothing but the Fire before his face. So guard yourselves against the Fire, even if by giving half a date in charity. And whoever cannot find even that, then with a kind word."

"Guard yourselves against the Fire" means place between yourselves and the Fire a barrier of righteous deeds that will protect you from entering it. "Even if by half a date" means even if you give in charity as little as half a date. "Interpreter" (turjuman) refers to one who translates speech from one language to another. "Left" (ash'am) means the left side. "Before his face" (tilqa'a) means directly in front of him.

Encouragement to give charity to the extent of one's ability and to adopt praiseworthy qualities. Treating others with gentleness and kind speech. Adorning oneself with acts of obedience and freeing oneself from evil deeds so that the believer will not be ashamed of his record before Allah, the Almighty. The closeness of the servant to Allah, the Most High, on the Day of Resurrection, with no barrier, intermediary, or interpreter between them. The believer should beware of disobeying his Lord's command. The individual is responsible for his own deeds, so let him be keen on performing righteous deeds that will benefit him on the Day of Resurrection and shield him from the Fire.
