Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "The extremists are doomed." He said it three times. Narrated by Muslim.
"The extremists" (al-mutanatti'un) are those who delve too deeply and are excessively strict in matters that do not warrant such strictness. Scholars have given several interpretations of tanattu' (extremism), among them: ~ Going to extremes in worship and in one’s dealings, to the point that it leads to undue hardship. ~ Introducing innovations into the religion — by forbidding what Allah the Exalted and His Messenger have not forbidden, and inventing new forms of worship. ~ Affectation in speech and ostentatious eloquence, straining after words. ~ Delving into what does not concern one, asking about what one ought not to ask, and burdening oneself with inquiry into what brings no benefit. ~ Probing into the details of the unseen matters which the Sacred Law has commanded us to believe in while leaving aside [questioning] their exact nature.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) emphatically confirmed the doom of those who go to extremes in their words and actions. Condemnation of affectation and pretentiousness in speech. Excessiveness brings no good; rather, it brings about the ruin of its practitioner.
