عن أَبِي عبد اللّه جابر بن سَمُرَةَ رضي اللّه عنهما قال: كُنْتُ أُصَلِّي مَعَ النَّبيِّ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم الصَّلَوَاتِ، فَكَانَتْ صلاتُهُ قَصدًا وخُطْبَتُه قَصْدًا» رواه مسلم.
Abu Abdullah Jabir ibn Samurah (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported: "I used to pray with the Prophet (peace be upon him), and his prayer was of moderate length and his sermon was of moderate length." Narrated by Muslim.
الشرح · explanation
قَصْدًا: أَيْ بَيْنَ الطُّولِ وَالْقِصَر. خُطبته: أي خطبة الجمعة وغيرها.
"Of moderate length" (qasdan) means between being too long and too short. "His sermon" refers to the Friday sermon and other sermons.

تخفيف النبيّ صلّى اللّه عليه وسلّم الصلاة والخطبة رحمةً بالمصلّين، ورأفةً بالمريض وصاحب الحاجة. رسول اللّه صلّى اللّه عليه وسلّم أوتي جوامع الكلم، وإنّه لم يكن يبالغ في الإيجاز. الحثّ على التوسّط في الأمور كلها. كراهة إطالة الخُطب إذا لم تكن حاجة لذلك خشية أن يملّ الناس وألّا يَعُوا ما يسمعون.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) shortened the prayer and sermon out of mercy for the worshippers and compassion for the sick and those with needs. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was granted concise, comprehensive speech, and he did not go to extremes in brevity. Encouragement to be moderate in all matters. It is disliked to prolong sermons unnecessarily, out of concern that people may become weary and fail to absorb what they hear.
