Riyad Al Salihin

On the authority of Salamah ibn Amr ibn al-Akwa (may Allah be pleased with him), that a man ate with his left hand in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). He said: 'Eat with your right hand.' The man said: 'I cannot.' He said: 'May you never be able to!' — Nothing prevented him except arrogance. And he never raised it to his mouth again. Narrated by Muslim.

I cannot (la astati'u): I am unable — though he had no ailment or disability. Had he truly been unable, the Prophet (peace be upon him) would have noticed and would not have commanded him to do what he could not, for he (peace be upon him) is the most merciful of people toward his nation. May you never be able to (la istata'ta): A supplication against him, due to his arrogance in refusing to follow the truth and act upon the sunnah without a valid excuse.

It is recommended to eat with the right hand, and it is disliked to eat with the left hand unless there is a valid excuse, such as illness or amputation. Eating and every noble matter should preferably be done with the right hand. It is an obligation to advise and correct others, even if done discreetly. Arrogance in refusing to comply with the Sacred Law brings severe punishment upon its perpetrator. The obligation to care for the sunnah, act upon it, and beware of contradicting it. It is permissible to supplicate against one who violates a ruling of the Shari'ah without a valid excuse. It is recommended to teach the one eating the proper etiquettes of eating if he violates them. The prohibition does not apply to one who has a wound, injury, or similar condition in his hand that prevents him from using it properly; such a person is permitted to eat or drink with his other hand, based on the well-known legal maxim: 'Necessity permits what is otherwise prohibited.'
