عنْ أَبِي عبدِ اللّه النُّعْمَانِ بْنِ بَشيرٍ رضي اللّه عنهما، قال: سمِعْتُ رسولَ اللّه صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم يقولُ: «لَتُسَوُّنَّ صُفُوفَكُمْ أَوْ لَيُخَالِفَنَّ اللّه بَيْنَ وُجُوهِكمْ» متفقٌ عليه. • وفي روايةٍ لِمُسلمٍ: كان رسولُ اللّه صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم يُسَوِّي صُفُوفَنَا حَتَّى كأَنَّمَا يُسَوي بِهَا الْقِداحَ حَتَّى إِذَا رأَى أَنَّا قَدْ عَقَلْنَا عَنْهُ، ثُمَّ خَرَجَ يَومًا فقامَ حتَّى كَادَ أَنْ يكبِّرَ، فَرأَى رجُلًا بادِيًا صدْرُهُ فقالَ: «عِبادَ الله لَتُسوُّنَّ صُفوفَكُمْ أَوْ لَيُخَالِفَنَّ اللّه بيْن وُجُوهِكُمْ».
On the authority of Abu Abdullah al-Nu'man ibn Bashir (may Allah be pleased with both of them), who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say: 'You must straighten your rows or Allah will create discord among you.' Agreed upon (narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim). In a narration of Muslim: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to straighten our rows as if he were straightening arrows with them. When he saw that we had understood this from him, he came out one day and stood until he was about to pronounce the takbir, then he noticed a man whose chest was protruding from the row. He said: 'Servants of Allah, you must straighten your rows, or Allah will create discord among you.'

لتسوّنّ صفوفكم: تقومون بانتظام وتراصٍّ لا يتقدم بعضكم على بعض. ليخالفنّ اللّه بين وجوهكم: هذا وعيد نبوي للتنفير من المخالفة، قيل: هو على حقيقته التخويف من أن يتحول وجه الإنسان فيكون في قفاه، وقيل: المراد أن تقع بينكم العداوة والبغضاء واختلاف القلوب. القِداح: خشب السهام واحدها قدح، والمراد المبالغة في تسويتها حتّى تصير كأنّما يقوّم بها السهام لشدّة استوائها واعتدالها. عَقَلنا: فَهمنا. باديًا: خارجًا عن الصفّ وانتظامه.
You must straighten your rows (latusawwunna sufufakum): Stand in proper order and alignment so that none of you is ahead of another. Allah will create discord among you (la-yukhalifanna Allahu bayna wujuhikum): This is a prophetic warning to deter from non-compliance. Some say it is to be taken literally — that one's face may be turned to face his back. Others say the meaning is that enmity and hatred will arise among you, and hearts will become estranged. Arrows (qidah): Arrow shafts, singular qidh; the meaning is that he would align the rows so perfectly as though he were straightening arrows, due to their extreme evenness and uniformity. Understood (aqalna): Comprehended. Protruding (badiyan): Extending beyond the row and its alignment.
