عن أَبِي موسى رضي اللّه عنه قال: احْتَرق بيْتٌ بالْمدِينَةِ عَلَى أَهلِهِ مِنَ اللَّيْل فَلَمَّا حُدِّث رسول اللّه صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم بِشَأْنِهمْ قال: «إِنَّ هَذِهِ النَّار عَدُوٌّ لكُمْ، فَإِذَا نِمْتُمْ فَأَطْفِئُوهَا عَنْكُمْ» متَّفقٌ عليه.
On the authority of Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: A house in Madinah burned down upon its inhabitants during the night. When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was told about what happened to them, he said: 'Indeed, this fire is an enemy to you. So when you go to sleep, extinguish it.' Agreed upon (narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim).

النّار عدوّ لكم: لإلحاقها الأذى والضّرر بالأبدان والأموال إذا انتشرت.
Fire is an enemy to you: Because it causes harm and damage to bodies and property when it spreads.

ينبغي إطفاء النار قبل النوم لخطورتها وفي كلّ وقت وجدت فيه الغفلة. فأطفئوها: الأمر للإرشاد لكونه لمصلحة دنيويّة، وقد يكون للنّدب والوجوب لأنّه قد يفضي إلى مصلحة دينيّة وهي حفظ النفس المحرَّم قتلُها وحفظ المال المحرَّم تبذيرُه. من فرَّط في إطفاء النّار كان مخالفًا لأمر الرسول صلّى اللّه عليه وسلّم. اهتمام الإسلام بالسلامة العامّة. مراعاة الإنسان للحيطة والحذر تحقيقًا للأمن.
One should extinguish fire before sleeping due to its danger, and whenever there is a state of heedlessness. Extinguish it (fa-atfi'uha): The command is for guidance since it pertains to a worldly benefit. It may also be considered recommended or obligatory since it could lead to a religious benefit, namely the preservation of life — which is inviolable — and the preservation of wealth — which must not be squandered. Whoever is negligent in extinguishing fire is in violation of the command of the Messenger (peace be upon him). Islam's concern with public safety. A person's observance of precaution and caution in order to ensure security.
