On the authority of Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: 'The parable of the guidance and knowledge with which Allah has sent me is that of rain falling upon the earth. A portion of it was fertile soil that absorbed the water and brought forth abundant vegetation and grass. Another portion was hard ground that held the water, and Allah benefited the people through it — they drank from it, watered their animals, and cultivated crops. And it fell upon another portion which was barren plains that neither retained the water nor produced vegetation. That is the parable of one who gains understanding in the religion of Allah and benefits from what Allah sent me with — he learns and teaches. And the parable of one who pays no heed to it and does not accept the guidance of Allah with which I have been sent.' Agreed upon (narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim).

The Messenger (peace be upon him) likened the knowledge he was sent with to beneficial rain, because it gives life to hearts just as rain gives life to the earth after its death. He likened those who benefit from it to fertile soil. He likened those who carry the knowledge and teach it but do not fully benefit from it themselves to hard ground that retains water from which people benefit. And he likened those who neither learn nor act to barren plains that neither hold water nor grow vegetation — these are the worst of people, neither benefiting themselves nor others. The encouragement to seek knowledge, learn, teach, and act upon knowledge, and the warning against turning away from knowledge. An exposition of the virtue of one who combines both benefiting from knowledge and benefiting others with it. This hadith contains a pedagogical directive from the Prophet (peace be upon him) in the use of parables, especially in the field of knowledge and education, because parables make meanings accessible and inspire desire for proper guidance. The Prophetic sunnah contains many examples of educational methods, which suffice those working in the field of education from imitating what other nations have produced.
