On the authority of Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) commanded the licking of fingers and the wiping clean of the dish, and said: 'You do not know in which part of the food the blessing lies.' Narrated by Muslim. In another narration of his: 'If a morsel of food falls from one of you, let him pick it up, remove whatever dirt may be on it, and eat it. He should not leave it for Satan. And let him not wipe his hand with a napkin until he has licked his fingers, for he does not know in which part of his food the blessing lies.' In yet another narration of his: 'Indeed, Satan is present with each one of you in everything he does, even being present with him at his meals. So if a morsel falls from one of you, let him remove whatever dirt may be on it and eat it, and not leave it for Satan.'

It is from the sunnah to lick the fingers and wipe the dishes clean. Licking the fingers and wiping the dishes clean is a means of preserving the blessing of food, while discarding leftover food is an affront to the blessing. One should eat food that has fallen on the ground after removing any dirt from it, provided it can be cleaned and did not fall on an impure surface. Belief in the existence of devils and that they eat. We accept this even though we do not know the manner in which they eat, as an affirmation of the truthful report. The practice of some people who throw excess food into garbage and similar places is evidence of carelessness and a harbinger of the loss of blessings, unless they repent and preserve them. It is poor etiquette to lick one's fingers during the meal, because one returns his fingers to the food with traces of his saliva. The recommended licking is after finishing the meal, and preferably out of sight of those sharing the meal. It is recommended to wash the hands after licking to remove any odor.
