عَنْ أَبِي سعيدٍ عبدِ اللّه بنِ مُغَفَّلٍ، رضي اللّه عنه، قال: نَهَى رسولُ اللّه صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم، عَن الخَذْفِ وقالَ: «إِنَّهُ لا يقْتُلُ الصَّيْدَ، ولا يَنْكَأُ الْعَدُوَّ، وَإِنَّهُ يَفْقَأُ الْعَيْنَ، ويَكْسِرُ السِّنَّ» متفقٌ عليه. • وفي رواية: أَنَّ قريبًا لابْنِ مُغَفَّلٍ خَذَفَ، فَنَهَاهُ وقال: إِنَّ رسولَ اللّه صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم نَهَى عن الخَذْفِ وقَالَ: «إِنَّهَا لا تَصِيدُ صَيْدًا» ثُمَّ عادَ، فقالَ: أُحَدِّثُكَ أَن رسولَ اللّه صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم، نَهَى عَنْهُ، ثُمَّ عُدْتَ تَخْذِفُ؟ لا أُكَلِّمُكَ أَبدًا.
On the authority of Abu Sa'id Abdullah ibn Mughaffal (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) prohibited flicking pebbles and said: 'It does not kill game, nor does it wound an enemy, but it can gouge out an eye and break a tooth.' Agreed upon (narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim). In another narration: A relative of Ibn Mughaffal flicked a pebble, so he forbade him and said: 'The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) prohibited flicking pebbles and said: "It does not catch any game."' Then the man did it again, so he said: 'I tell you that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) prohibited it, and then you go back to flicking pebbles? I shall never speak to you again.'

الخذف: أن ترمي بقوة بحصاة أو نواة تأخذها بين الإبهام والسبّابة، أو بمخذفة من خشب. لا ينكأ: من النكاية وهو إلحاق الأذى والجراح بالعدوّ. يفقأ: يقلع.
Flicking pebbles (al-khadhf): Forcefully throwing a small stone or date pit held between the thumb and index finger, or using a wooden slingshot. Does not wound (la yanka'): From nikayah, meaning inflicting harm and injury upon the enemy. Gouge out (yafqa'): To pluck out.

أن رسول اللّه صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم نَهَى عَن الخَذْفِ لأنّه لا فائدة منه، وربما يترتّب عليه ضرر بالآخرين. جواز هجران أهل البدع والمعاصي حتى يتركوها. اهتمام الإسلام بالسلامة العامّة ومنعه ما يضر. يجب على كل مؤمنٍ أن يعظّم سُنَّة النّبيّ صلى اللّه عليه وسلّم.
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) prohibited flicking pebbles because there is no benefit in it, and it may cause harm to others. It is permissible to shun people of innovation and disobedience until they abandon their ways. Islam's concern with public safety and its prohibition of what causes harm. Every believer must venerate the sunnah of the Prophet (peace be upon him).
