On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: When the following verse was revealed to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him): {To Allah belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is on the earth. Whether you disclose what is in your minds or conceal it, Allah will call you to account for it} [al-Baqarah: 284], this was extremely difficult for the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). They came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), then knelt upon their knees and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, we have been charged with deeds that we are able to bear — prayer, jihad, fasting, and charity — but this verse has been revealed to you and we cannot bear it.' The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: 'Do you wish to say as the People of the two Books before you said: "We hear and we disobey"? Rather, say: "We hear and we obey. Your forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the final return."' When the people recited it and their tongues submitted to it, Allah the Most High then revealed after it: {The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and so have the believers. All of them have believed in Allah, His angels, His books, and His messengers, saying: "We make no distinction between any of His messengers." And they said: "We hear and we obey. Your forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the final return."} When they did so, Allah the Most High abrogated the former verse and revealed: {Allah does not burden a soul beyond its capacity. It will have the reward of what good it has earned, and it will bear the consequence of what evil it has committed. Our Lord, do not take us to task if we forget or make a mistake.} He said: 'Yes.' {Our Lord, do not lay upon us a burden as You laid upon those before us.} He said: 'Yes.' {Our Lord, do not burden us with what we have no strength to bear.} He said: 'Yes.' {And pardon us, and forgive us, and have mercy upon us. You are our Protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people.} He said: 'Yes.' Narrated by Muslim.

The permissibility of abrogation in matters of legal obligation. The fear of the Companions of being held accountable for what they had no power to repel, such as passing thoughts and the like. The virtue of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) for their compliance with the command of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). The mercy of Allah the Most High toward His servants in lightening their burden when they submitted and complied. The hadith is evidence that one is not held accountable for fleeting thoughts. The Muslim's stance toward the commands of Allah the Most High should be one of compliance and obedience.
