On the authority of Abu al-Abbas, Sahl ibn Sa'd al-Sa'idi (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said on the day of Khaybar: 'Tomorrow I shall give the banner to a man through whom Allah will grant victory. He loves Allah and His Messenger, and Allah and His Messenger love him.' The people spent the night wondering which of them would be given it. When morning came, they went to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), each hoping he would be the one. He said: 'Where is Ali ibn Abi Talib?' They said: 'O Messenger of Allah, he is suffering from an ailment in his eyes.' He said: 'Send for him.' When he was brought, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) spat in his eyes and supplicated for him. He was cured as if he had never had any ailment. He then gave him the banner. Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: 'O Messenger of Allah, shall I fight them until they become like us?' He said: 'Advance at your pace until you reach their ground, then call them to Islam and inform them of what Allah the Most High requires of them. For by Allah, that Allah should guide a single man through you is better for you than red camels.' Agreed upon (narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim).

The virtue and status of Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), and the extent of the Prophet's (peace be upon him) trust in him. The miracle of the Prophet (peace be upon him): firstly, the healing that occurred through his blessing by Allah's permission; secondly, the glad tidings of conquest, which occurred exactly as he (peace be upon him) had foretold. The eagerness of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) for the love of Allah and His Messenger, their striving to draw near to Their pleasure, and their competition in good. A great prophetic directive in his saying not to turn aside — for turning aside is blameworthy in several situations, including during prayer, except in cases of pressing need. The nobility of Islam in its call, its etiquette in its struggle, and its objective in rescuing humanity from misguidance and loss. The virtue of calling to Allah the Almighty, and the encouragement toward good and truth, for the immense reward and recompense it yields. The primary purpose of the messengers and those who call to Allah is to guide people, rescue them from polytheism, and bring them from darkness into light. If they persist in polytheism and obstinately resist, then combat comes after that. There is no objection to swearing an oath when one is truthful; indeed, it may be recommended and legislated when there is a need for emphasis, so that the addressee understands that this is truth and that it is something required.
