عن أَبِي سعيدٍ الخُدْرِيِّ رضي اللّه عنهُ أَنَّ رسولَ اللّه صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم بَعَثَ بَعْثًا إِلى بَني لِحيانَ مِنْ هُذَيْلٍ فقالَ: «لِيَنْبَعِثْ مِنْ كُلِّ رَجُلَيْنِ أَحَدُهُمَا وَالأَجْرُ بَيْنَهُمَا» رواه مسلم.
On the authority of Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) dispatched an expedition to Banu Lihyan of the tribe of Hudhayl and said: 'Let one of every two men set out, and the reward shall be shared between them.' Narrated by Muslim.

بعث: أرسل، والمقصود: أراد أن يرسل. بعثًا: أي مجموعة من المقاتلين، والمقصود من ذلك ألا تخرج القبيلة بأسرها. بنو لحيان: جزء من قبيلة هذيل، وهُذَيل قبيلة من قبائل العرب المشهورة، وقد كان بنو لحيان مشركين آنذاك.
Dispatched (ba'atha): Sent; the meaning is that he intended to send. Expedition (ba'than): A group of fighters; the intention was that the entire tribe should not go out altogether. Banu Lihyan: A branch of the tribe of Hudhayl, and Hudhayl is one of the well-known Arab tribes. Banu Lihyan were polytheists at that time.

أنّه لا يذهب رجال القبيلة أو رجال البلد جميعهم إلى الجهاد، بل يذهب بعضهم، ويكون لمن بقي منهم مثل أجر من خرج إذا خلفوهم في أهليهم بخير وأنفقوا عليهم. الحديث يشير إلى توزيع المسؤولية بين أفراد الأمة، إذْ الحياة تتطلب أنواعًا من التبعات، فبعضهم يقوم برعاية شؤون الأسر والآخرون يشاركون في الجهاد.
Not all the men of a tribe or town should go out for jihad; rather, some of them should go, and those who remain shall receive a reward equal to that of those who went, provided they look after their families with goodness and spend on them. The hadith points to the distribution of responsibility among the members of the nation, as life requires various types of obligations — some fulfill the care of family affairs while others participate in jihad.
