Riyad Al Salihin

On the authority of Jarir ibn Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I gave my pledge of allegiance to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) upon: establishing the prayer, paying the zakat, and giving sincere counsel to every Muslim. Agreed upon (narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim).

I gave my pledge of allegiance (baya'tu): I made a covenant and agreement. The meaning of sincere counsel (al-nush): That a Muslim be genuine with his brother in his dealings, truthful with him in buying and selling and in what he wishes for him. Part of the completeness of sincerity toward a Muslim is that he loves for his brother what he loves for himself.

The importance of counsel and mutual counseling among Muslims, as the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) gave their pledge of allegiance to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) upon it, among them Jarir ibn Abdullah, who fulfilled what he had pledged to Allah, as was the well-known characteristic of the Companions and the truthful believers. Sincere counsel is the right of a Muslim upon another Muslim, and not merely a favor or grace that one bestows upon another. Sincere counsel is among the most prominent and noble functions of the messengers, for there was no messenger or prophet whom Allah the Most High sent except that he strove in counseling his nation. Sincere counsel to the non-Muslim is also valid: by calling him to Islam and advising him toward what is right if he seeks counsel. Sincere counsel to a Muslim is obligatory: by guiding him to what benefits him. Some conditions for sincere counsel include the points mentioned above. That the counselor be motivated by love of good for his Muslim brother and by his dislike that any harm should befall him. That the counselor be sincere in it, seeking thereby the Face of Allah, not intending to display superiority over his brother. That the counsel be free of deceit and treachery. That he not intend by the counsel to reproach or to humiliate. That the counsel be given in a spirit of brotherhood and affection, without harshness or severity. That the counsel be based on knowledge, clear explanation, and sound proof. That it be given in private, not proclaimed before people except for an overriding benefit. That the counselor choose the best of expressions, be gentle with the one advised, and soften his words to him. That the counselor be patient with whatever harm may befall him on account of his counsel. Keeping the secret, concealing the faults of the Muslim, and not exposing his honor; for the sincere counselor is a compassionate, kind companion who loves good and desires to conceal faults. That he ascertain and verify before counseling, and not act on mere suspicion, so as not to accuse his brother of what is not true of him. That he choose an appropriate time for the counsel.
