وَعَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاس رضي اللّهُ عنهما أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللّهِ صلّى اللّهُ عليه وسلّم قَالَ: «لَوْ أَنَّ لابْنِ آدَمَ وَادِيًا مِنْ ذَهبٍ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يَكُونَ لَهُ وادِيان، وَلَنْ يَمْلأَ فَاهُ إِلَّا التُّرَابُ، وَيَتُوبُ اللّهُ عَلَى مَنْ تَابَ» مُتَّفَقٌ عَليْهِ.
On the authority of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with both of them), that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "If the son of Adam had a valley full of gold, he would love to have a second. Nothing fills his mouth except the dust [of the grave]. And Allah accepts the repentance of whoever repents." Agreed upon (narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim).
الشرح · explanation
واديًا: أي ما يملأ واديًا. لن يملأ جوفه إلّا التراب: أي لا يزال حريصًا حتى يموت ويمتلئ جوفه من تراب قبره.
"A valley" (wadiyan): meaning enough to fill a valley. "Nothing fills his mouth except the dust": meaning he remains greedy until he dies and his mouth is filled with the dirt of his grave.

عبّر بالوادي من ذهب للمبالغة في الكثرة. لا حرجَ في طلب التوسعة في الدنيا ولكن المذموم الانشغال بها عن الطاعات. التوبة من أهم الواجبات، ومن أفضل نعم اللّه على العباد، واللّه جعل لهم فرجًا من الذنوب بالتوبة. شدة حرصِ الإنسان على جمع المال وغيره من متاع الدنيا، وهذا الحرص الشديد مذموم إذا كان فيه تضييع للطاعة، وانشغال القلب بالدنيا أكثر من الآخرة. يقبل اللّه تعالى توبة مَن تاب مِن الصفات المذمومة.
The valley of gold is used as an expression to emphasize an enormous quantity. There is no harm in seeking comfort and abundance in worldly life, but what is blameworthy is being preoccupied by it at the expense of acts of obedience. Repentance is among the most important obligations and the greatest blessings of Allah upon His servants; Allah has provided them an outlet from sins through repentance. The intensity of the human being's greed for accumulating wealth and other worldly possessions; this excessive greed is blameworthy when it leads to neglecting obedience and the heart becoming more occupied with this world than with the Hereafter. Allah the Most High accepts the repentance of whoever repents from blameworthy traits.
