عنْ أَبِي سَعيد الْخُدْرِيِّ رضي اللّه عنه عن النَّبِيِّ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم قال: «إِيَّاكُم وَالْجُلُوسَ في الطرُقاتِ» فقَالُوا: يَا رسَولَ اللّه مَا لَنَا مِنْ مَجالِسنَا بُدٌّ، نَتحدَّثُ فِيهَا، فقال رسول اللّه صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم: «فَإِذَا أَبَيْتُمْ إِلَّا الْمَجْلِس فَأَعْطُوا الطَّريقَ حَقَّهُ» قالوا: ومَا حَقُّ الطَّرِيقِ يا رسولَ اللّه؟ قال: «غَضُّ الْبَصَر، وكَفُّ الأَذَى، ورَدُّ السَّلامِ، وَالأَمْرُ بالْمعْروفِ، والنَّهْيُ عنِ الْمُنْكَرِ» متفقٌ عليه.
On the authority of Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Prophet (peace be upon him), who said: 'Beware of sitting in the roads.' They said: 'O Messenger of Allah, we have no alternative but to sit in them, for we converse there.' The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: 'If you insist on sitting there, then give the road its right.' They said: 'And what is the right of the road, O Messenger of Allah?' He said: 'Lowering the gaze, refraining from causing harm, returning the greeting of peace, enjoining good, and forbidding evil.' Agreed upon (narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim).

إياكم: احذروا وابتعدوا. ما لنا من مجالسنا بدّ: لا نستطيع الاستغناء عنها. غضّ البصر: كفّ البصر عن المُحرَّمات. كفّ الأذى: ترك أذيّة الناس ورَدُّ الأذى ومنعه عنهم.
Beware (iyyakum): Be cautious and keep away. We have no alternative but to sit in them (ma lana min majalisinabudd): We cannot do without them. Lowering the gaze (ghadd al-basar): Restraining the eyes from looking at what is forbidden. Refraining from causing harm (kaff al-adha): Abstaining from harming people, and repelling and preventing harm from them.

النهيُ عن الجلوس في الطريق لِما يحصل فيه من تعرُّضِ الإنسان للوقوع في بعض المعاصي ولِما فيه من تضييق للحقّ العام. الطريق من المرافق العامّة التي هي ملك للمجتمع، لا يجوز للفرد أن يُضعف استفادة الناس منها أو يُزعجهم بجلوسه فيه. على المسلم أن يكون دائم العمل لنشر الخير والدعوة إليه.
The prohibition of sitting in the road because of the potential for a person to fall into some sins and because of the encroachment upon public space. The road is a public facility that belongs to the community; an individual has no right to diminish the people's use of it or disturb them by sitting in it. A Muslim should always be active in spreading good and calling to it.
