عن ابن عباس رضي اللّه عنهما أَنّ رسولَ اللّه صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم رأى خَاتمًا مِنْ ذَهَبٍ في يَد رَجُلٍ، فَنَزعَهُ فطَرحَهُ وقَال: «يَعْمَدُ أَحَدُكُمْ إِلَى جَمْرَةٍ مِنْ نَارٍ فَيجْعلهَا في يَدِهِ» فَقِيل لِلرَّجُل بَعْدَ مَا ذَهَبَ رسولُ اللّه صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم: خُذْ خَاتمَكَ، انتَفعْ بِهِ. قَالَ: لا واللّه لا آخُذُهُ أَبَدًا وقَدْ طَرحهُ رسول اللّه صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم. رواه مسلم.
On the authority of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with both of them), that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) saw a gold ring on the hand of a man. He pulled it off and threw it away, saying: 'Would one of you deliberately take an ember from the Fire and place it on his hand?!' After the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) had left, it was said to the man: 'Take your ring and benefit from it.' He said: 'No, by Allah! I will never take it after the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) has thrown it away.' Narrated by Muslim.
الشرح · explanation
يعمد: يقصد ويتوجه. فيجعلها في يده: أي يجعلها في أصبعه، وهو من باب إطلاق الكُل وإرادة الجزء. انتفعْ به: ببيع أو هبة، أو جعله للنساء.
Deliberately takes (ya'midu): Intends and sets out to. Place it on his hand: Meaning on his finger — this is a figure of speech where the whole is mentioned but the part is intended. Benefit from it (intafi' bihi): By selling it, giving it as a gift, or making it into jewelry for women.

Removing evil by hand for one whose authority includes such action. The prohibition of gold rings for men, and this prohibition is one of strict forbiddance. From the hadith, it can be understood that wearing a gold ring for a man is among the major sins, due to the severity of the warning against it.
