عَنْ أَبِي سعيدٍ الحسنِ البصْرِيِّ أَنَّ عَائِذَ بن عَمْرٍو رضي اللّه عنه دخَلَ عَلَى عُبَيْدِ اللّه بن زيَادٍ فَقَالَ: أَيْ بُنيَّ، إِنِّي سمِعتُ رسولَ اللّه صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم يَقولُ: «إِنَّ شَرَّ الرِّعاءِ الْحُطَمَةُ» فَإِيَّاكَ أَنْ تَكُونَ مِنْهُمْ. فَقَالَ لَهُ: اجْلِسْ فَإِنَّمَا أَنت مِنْ نُخَالَةِ أَصْحَابِ مُحَمَّدٍ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم، فقال: وهَلْ كَانَتْ لَهُمْ نُخَالَة، إِنَّمَا كَانَتِ النُّخالَةُ بَعْدَهُمْ وَفي غَيرِهِمْ. رواه مسلم.
On the authority of Abu Sa'id, al-Hasan al-Basri, that A'idh ibn Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) entered upon Ubayd Allah ibn Ziyad and said: 'My son, I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say: "Indeed, the worst of shepherds are the harsh and brutal ones." So beware of being one of them.' Ubayd Allah said to him: 'Sit down, for you are nothing but chaff from among the Companions of Muhammad (peace be upon him).' He replied: 'Was there ever chaff among them? Chaff only came after them and from others besides them.' Narrated by Muslim.

عائذ بن عمرو: صحابي جليل شهد الحديبية وبايع بيعة الرضوان تحت الشجرة، سكن البصرة وتوفي بها في إمارة عبيد اللّه بن زياد أيام يزيد بن معاوية. عبيد اللّه بن زياد: أمير البصرة في زمن يزيد بن معاوية. الرِّعاء: جَمع رَاعٍ، والمراد هنا الأمراء. الحُطَمة: العنيف برعيته لا يرفق بهم، وأصله العنيف في رعاية الإبل، ضربه مثلًا لوالي السوء. من نُخالة: نُخالة الدقيق هي قشوره، واستخدمها هنا تنقيصًا وذمًّا، أي أنت من طبقة متدنّية من الصحابة ولست من فضلائهم.
A'idh ibn Amr: A noble Companion who witnessed the Treaty of al-Hudaybiyyah and gave the Pledge of Ridwan under the tree. He settled in Basrah and died there during the governorship of Ubayd Allah ibn Ziyad in the time of Yazid ibn Mu'awiyah. Ubayd Allah ibn Ziyad: The governor of Basrah during the time of Yazid ibn Mu'awiyah. Shepherds (al-ri'a'): Plural of ra'in; here it refers to rulers. The harsh and brutal one (al-hutamah): One who is violent with his flock and shows them no gentleness. Originally, it refers to one who is rough in tending camels — used here as a simile for a wicked governor. Chaff (nukhalah): The husks of flour; he used it here to belittle and disparage, meaning 'you are from the lowest rank of the Companions and not from their distinguished ones.'
