Riyad Al Salihin

Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "The first deficiency that afflicted the Children of Israel was that a man would meet another and say: 'O you! Fear Allah and abandon what you are doing, for it is not lawful for you.' Then he would meet him the next day while he persisted in the same behavior, yet that would not prevent him from being his eating companion, drinking companion, and sitting companion. When they did this, Allah caused the hearts of some of them to be corrupted by others." Then he recited: "Those among the Children of Israel who disbelieved were cursed by the tongue of David and of Jesus, son of Mary. That was because they disobeyed and used to transgress. They would not forbid one another from the evil they committed. How wretched was what they used to do! You see many of them allying with those who disbelieved. How wretched is what their souls have sent ahead for them..." up to His saying: "...transgressors" [al-Ma'idah: 78-81]. Then he said: "Nay, by Allah! You shall certainly enjoin good, and you shall certainly forbid evil, and you shall certainly restrain the wrongdoer, and you shall certainly compel him to conform to the truth, and you shall certainly confine him to the truth — or else Allah will cause the hearts of some of you to be corrupted by others, and then He will curse you as He cursed them." Narrated by Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi, who graded it as a good (hasan) hadith. This is the wording of Abu Dawud. The wording of al-Tirmidhi states: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "When the Children of Israel fell into sins, their scholars admonished them, but they did not desist. Yet the scholars continued to sit with them in their gatherings, and eat and drink with them. So Allah caused the hearts of some of them to be corrupted by others, and cursed them by the tongue of David and of Jesus, son of Mary — that was because they disobeyed and used to transgress." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) sat up — he had been reclining — and said: "No! By the One in Whose hand is my soul, [you must continue] until you compel them to conform to the truth."

Deficiency (al-naqs): meaning deficiency in religion. Fear Allah (ittaq Allah): make obedience to Allah's commands and avoidance of His prohibitions a shield protecting you from His punishment. His eating companion, drinking companion, and sitting companion (akilahu wa sharibahu wa qa'idahu): meaning the one who accompanies him in eating, drinking, and sitting. Allying with those who disbelieved (yatawallawna alladhina kafaru): meaning they support them and take them as allies. You shall certainly compel them / until you compel them (la-ta'tirunnahhu / hatta ta'tiruhum): meaning you must bend them, oblige them, and force them with strength. You shall certainly confine him (la-taqsurunnahhu): meaning you must restrict him.

The Jews combined committing evil, publicizing it, and failing to forbid it. Associating with those who disobey Allah's commands is a cause of diminished faith and a cause for the descent of Allah's wrath. Muslims are not excused from leaving wrongdoers to their own devices and remaining silent about their sins, for this amounts to encouraging sin and spreading it. Merely forbidding evil with the tongue is not sufficient when one has the ability to prevent it by hand and to compel compliance with the truth. Allah darkens the heart of one who did not sin due to the evil influence of those who did sin, because of sins and their mutual association.
