عن أَبي هريرة، رضي اللّه عنه، أن رسولَ اللّه صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم قال: «آيَةُ المُنَافِقِ ثَلاثٌ: إِذَا حَدَّثَ كَذَبَ، وَإِذَا وَعَدَ أَخْلَفَ، وإِذَا اؤْتُمِنَ خَانَ» متفقٌ عليه. • وفي رواية: «وَإِنْ صَامَ وَصَلَّى وزعَمَ أَنَّهُ مُسْلِمٌ».
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "The signs of a hypocrite are three: when he speaks he lies, when he makes a promise he breaks it, and when he is entrusted he betrays." Agreed upon (narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim). In another narration: "Even if he fasts, prays, and claims to be a Muslim."

آية المنافق: أي علامة المنافق. المنافق: الّذي يخالف ظاهرُه باطنَه. أخلف: لم يفِ بوعده. زَعَم: الزَّعمُ: يطلق بمعنى القول أو الظن أو الاعتقاد، لكن أكثر ما يُستعمل فيما كان باطلًا أو فيه ارتياب.
The sign of the hypocrite (ayat al-munafiq): meaning the distinguishing mark of a hypocrite. The hypocrite (al-munafiq): one whose outward appearance contradicts his inner reality. Breaks it (akhlafa): did not fulfill his promise. Claims (za'ama): The word za'm is used to mean a statement, an assumption, or a belief, but it is most often used for what is false or doubtful.

شمول الإسلام لجوانب التعامل الصادق مع الناس في الحديث والوعد والأمانة. تحذير النّبيّ صلّى اللّه عليه وسلّم المسلمين من مرض النفاق وبيان علاماته لِبيان شدّة خطره. من اجتمعت فيه هذه الصفات دل ذلك على تأصُّل الشر فيه حتى وُصِف بالنفاق ونُفي عنه الإسلام، وهذا وعيد شديد. أنّ اجتماع هذه الصفات قد يكون سببًا يقود صاحبه للخروج من الإسلام. ضرورة محاسبة الإنسان نفسه لسلامة إيمانه. بيان أن هذه الصفات أكثر ما تظهر من المنافقين نفاقًا أكبر.
Islam encompasses all aspects of honest dealings with people in speech, promises, and trusts. The Prophet (peace be upon him) warned Muslims against the disease of hypocrisy and made its signs clear to show the severity of its danger. Whoever combines all these traits in himself, it indicates that evil has taken root in him to the extent that he is described as a hypocrite and Islam is negated from him — this is a severe warning. The combination of these traits may lead their possessor to apostasy from Islam. Every person must hold himself accountable to safeguard his faith. These traits are most prominently found among those guilty of major hypocrisy.
