عن جابر رضي اللّه عنه أَنَّ رسولَ اللّه صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم قال: «اتَّقُوا الظُّلْمَ فَإِنَّ الظُّلْمَ ظُلُمَاتٌ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ، واتَّقُوا الشُّحَّ فَإِنَّ الشُّحَّ أَهْلَكَ مـَنْ كَانَ قَبْلَكُمْ، حملَهُمْ على أَنْ سَفَكُوا دِماءَهُمْ واسْتَحلُّوا مَحارِمَهُمْ» رواه مسلم.
Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Beware of injustice, for injustice will be darkness upon darkness on the Day of Resurrection. And beware of miserliness, for miserliness destroyed those who came before you: it led them to shed one another's blood and to violate what was sacred to them." Narrated by Muslim.

اتقوا: احذروا واجتنبوا. الظلم: هو في اللغة وضع الشيء في غير محله، وشرعًا: مجاوزة الحد وعدم إيصال الحقّ إلى صاحبه. الشّحّ: البخل الشديد مع الحرص. حملهم: كان سببًا لفعلهم. سفكوا دماءهم: قتل بعضهم بعضًا ليأخذ ماله. استحلوا محارمهم: استباحوا نساءهم أو ما حرّم اللّه تعالى عليهم من أموالهم وغيرها.
Beware (ittaqu): be cautious and avoid. Injustice (al-zulm): linguistically, it means placing something where it does not belong; in Islamic law, it means exceeding the proper limits and withholding rights from those who are entitled to them. Miserliness (al-shuhh): extreme stinginess combined with greed. Led them (hamalahum): was the cause of their actions. Shed their blood (safaku dima'ahum): they killed one another to seize each other's wealth. Violated what was sacred (istahallu maharimahum): they treated as lawful their women, or what Allah had forbidden them of wealth and other things.

The encouragement to avoid injustice and miserliness, and to follow the path of justice, generosity, and magnanimity. Injustice is among the major sins that will bring severe anguish and painful punishment upon its perpetrator on the Day of Resurrection. Greed for worldly possessions and miserliness often lead people to sins and transgressions, causing them to fall into immoral acts and evil deeds.
