Riyad Al Salihin

On the authority of Abu Malik, al-Harith ibn 'Asim al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Purification is half of faith. 'Al-hamdu lillah' (praise be to Allah) fills the Scale, and 'Subhan Allah wa al-hamdu lillah' (glory be to Allah and praise be to Allah) fill -- or fills -- what is between the heavens and the earth. Prayer is a light, charity is a proof, patience is a radiance, and the Quran is an argument for you or against you. Every person goes out in the morning and sells himself, either freeing himself or destroying himself." Narrated by Muslim.

An encouragement toward purification and an explanation of its status in the religion: it is half of faith, and the virtue of cleanliness from ritual and physical impurities is immense. An explanation of the virtue of glorification and praise of Allah; the phrase 'al-hamdu lillah' fills the Scale due to the greatness of its virtue and its indication of the servant's praise of Allah. The actions and words of the children of Adam have substance on the Day of Resurrection and are weighed on the Scale. An encouragement to perform the prayer, whether obligatory or voluntary, for it is a light due to what it brings of illumination to the believer's heart, expansion of his chest, and its restraining him from sins and forbidding him from indecencies. Charity is evidence and proof of the sincerity of the giver's faith and his love for Allah, because wealth is beloved to the soul, and souls are naturally inclined to hold on to it and withhold it. Patience in all its forms is good, and patience is among the greatest deeds of the heart. Whoever acts upon the Quran, it is an argument in his favor; whoever does not act upon the Quran, it is an argument against him. Every human being must act; he either frees his soul or destroys it.
