On the authority of Suhayb ibn Sinan (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "How wondrous is the affair of the believer! Indeed, all his affairs are good for him, and this is for no one except the believer: If something pleasing befalls him, he gives thanks, and that is good for him. And if something harmful befalls him, he shows patience, and that is good for him." Narrated by Muslim.

Gratitude for blessings and prosperity is a cause for the increase of bounties. Patience during affliction is a trait of faith. The life of a Muslim, with all its joys and sorrows, is entirely good and rewarding for him before Allah, and in this is an encouragement toward faith. The believer of complete faith gives thanks to Allah the Most High in times of prosperity and shows patience in times of adversity, thereby attaining the good of both abodes. As for the one of deficient faith, he becomes frustrated and discontented with calamity, so he is struck with both the affliction itself and the burden of his discontent. He fails to recognize the true value of blessings, so he does not fulfill their rights or show gratitude, and the bounty turns into a punishment for him.
