On the authority of Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), who asked the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) about the plague. He informed her that it was a punishment that Allah the Most High would send upon whom He willed, but Allah the Most High made it a mercy for the believers. There is no servant who resides in a land afflicted by plague, remaining there patiently and seeking reward, knowing that nothing will befall him except what Allah has decreed for him, except that he will have a reward like that of a martyr." Narrated by al-Bukhari.

A believer afflicted by the plague, who hopes for reward and recompense through his patience upon what Allah has tested him with, without being discontented, receives the reward of a martyr. When a plague strikes a land in which a person resides, he should not leave it, so as not to spread the contagion to other lands. This hadith serves as evidence for the principle of quarantine for those afflicted with contagious diseases. The reward of martyrdom is not limited to those killed in battle; rather, it encompasses many others, including the plague-stricken, the drowned, and the woman who dies in childbirth. The call in this hadith for the afflicted to be patient and remain in the land does not conflict with taking the means of seeking medical treatment, for the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'Seek treatment, O servants of Allah.' Patience during illness is evidence of contentment with divine decree, and is a mark of complete faith.
