عَنْ أَنسٍ رضي اللّهُ عنه قال: سَمِعْتُ رسول اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم يقولُ: «إنَّ اللّهَ عَزَّ وجَلَّ قَالَ: إِذَا ابْتَلَيْتُ عَبدِي بحبيبتَيْهِ فَصبَرَ عَوَّضْتُهُ مِنْهُمَا الْجَنَّةَ» يُريدُ عَيْنَيْه. رواه البخاري.
On the authority of Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say: "Allah the Almighty said: 'When I test My servant with his two beloved ones [his eyes] and he bears it with patience, I compensate him for them with Paradise.'" He meant his two eyes. Narrated by al-Bukhari.

ابتليت: أي اختبرت. حبيبتيه: أي عينيه.
"I test" (ibtulaytu): meaning I put to trial. "His two beloved ones" (habibatayhi): meaning his two eyes.

خص النبيّ صلّى اللّه عليه وسلّم العينين بهذا الجزاء، لأنّهما من أحب أعضاء الإنسان إليه. الجنة أعظم العِوض، لأن التمتع بالبصر يفنى بفناء الدنيا، وأما التمتع بالجنة فباقٍ دائمًا. ابتلاءُ اللّه عبدَه في الدنيا، ليس من سخطه عليه، بل إما لدفْع مكروهٍ، أو لكفَّارة ذنوبٍ، أو لرفع منزلةٍ، فإذا تلقَّى ذلك بالرضا تَمَّ له المراد (الجنة). المؤمن يَصبر مستحضرًا ما وعد اللّه به الصابر من الثواب، وكلّما عظُمَ الابتلاء عظُمَ الأجر.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) singled out the eyes for this reward because they are among the most beloved organs to a person. Paradise is the greatest compensation, because the enjoyment of sight perishes with the perishing of this world, while the enjoyment of Paradise is everlasting and permanent. Allah's testing of His servant in this world is not out of displeasure with him; rather, it is either to avert a greater harm, to expiate sins, or to elevate his rank. If the servant accepts this with contentment, the intended result (Paradise) is achieved. The believer endures patiently while keeping in mind what Allah has promised the patient one of reward; the greater the trial, the greater the reward.
