Riyad Al Salihin

On the authority of Jabir ibn Abdullah al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with both of them), who said: We were with the Prophet (peace be upon him) on a military expedition when he said: "Indeed, in Madinah there are men who were with you in every march you undertook and every valley you crossed; they were held back by illness." In another narration: "...except that they shared with you in the reward." Narrated by Muslim. And al-Bukhari narrated on the authority of Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: We returned from the expedition of Tabuk with the Prophet (peace be upon him) and he said: "Indeed, there are people who remained behind us in Madinah; we did not traverse any mountain pass or valley except that they were with us; they were held back by legitimate excuse."

Whoever is prevented by a valid excuse from performing a righteous deed receives the reward of the one who performed it, provided his intention and desire to do it were sincere. A Muslim is credited with the full reward of a deed he used to perform when he was able, but later became incapable of doing. Illness that prevents a person from performing his customary acts of obedience does not prevent the reward from being recorded for him.
