عنْ عبْدِ اللّه بنِ مسْعُودٍ رضي اللّه عنه قَال: كَأَنِّي أَنْظُرُ إِلى رسولِ اللّه صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم يحْكي نَبيًّا من الأَنْبِياءِ، صلواتُ اللّهِ وسَلاَمُهُ عَليْهم، ضَرَبَهُ قَوْمُهُ فَأَدْمَوْهُ وهُو يمْسحُ الدَّمَ عنْ وجْهِهِ، يقُولُ: «اللَّهمَّ اغْفِرْ لِقَوْمي فإِنَّهُمْ لا يعْلمُونَ» متفقٌ عَلَيْه.
On the authority of Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: It is as if I can see the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) describing a prophet from among the prophets -- may Allah's blessings and peace be upon them -- whose people struck him and made him bleed, and he was wiping the blood from his face, saying: "O Allah, forgive my people, for they do not know." Agreed upon (narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim).
الشرح · explanation
يحكي نبيًّا: أي يصوِّر حالة نبيٍّ من الأنبياء، قيل إنّ هذا النبيّ هو نوح عليه السلام.
"Describing a prophet" (yahki nabiyyan): meaning he was depicting the state of a prophet from among the prophets; it is said that this prophet was Nuh (Noah), peace be upon him.

صبرُ الأنبياء وتحملُهم الأذى في سبيل تبليغ دعوتهم للناس. من أخلاق الأنبياء مقابلة الجهل بالغفران والمسامحة. عدم معاملة الجاهلين بمثل أعمالهم. التأسي بأخلاق النبيّ صلّى اللّه عليه وسلّم في تحمُّل الأذى، فقد شُجَّ وجهه وسال الدم منه يوم أحد، ولم يزد على أن قال: "اللّهم اغفر لقومي فإنهم لا يعلمون".
The patience of the prophets and their endurance of harm for the sake of conveying their message to the people. Among the moral qualities of the prophets is meeting ignorance with forgiveness and pardon. Not treating the ignorant in the same manner as their behavior. Following the example of the Prophet (peace be upon him) in bearing harm; his face was wounded and blood flowed from it on the day of Uhud, yet he said nothing more than: 'O Allah, forgive my people, for they do not know.'
