عنْ أبي سعيدٍ وأبي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُما عَنِ النبيّ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم قال: «ما يُصيبُ المسلِمَ مِنْ نَصَبٍ ولا وَصَبٍ، ولا هَمٍّ ولا حَزَنٍ، ولا أذًى ولا غَمٍّ حتّى الشوكَةُ يُشاكُها إلَّا كفَّر اللّهُ بِها مِنْ خَطاياه» مُتَّفقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
Abu Sa'id and Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "No fatigue, illness, anxiety, sorrow, harm, or distress befalls a Muslim — even the prick of a thorn — except that Allah expiates some of his sins thereby." Agreed upon.

مِن نَصَب: من تعب وإعياء. ولا وَصَب: مرض موجع. ولا أذًى: هو كل ما لا يلائم النفْس. ولا غمّ: هو أبْلغ من الحَزَن يشتد بمن قام به، حتى يغمى عليه. يُشاكُها: أي تشكُّه وتدخل في جسده. من خطاياه: أي بعض خطاياه، لأنّ بعض الذنوب لا يُكفَّر بذلك كحقوق الناس والكبائر.
"Fatigue" (nasab): tiredness and exhaustion. "Illness" (wasab): a painful disease. "Harm" (adha): everything that is disagreeable to the soul. "Distress" (ghamm): more intense than sorrow (huzn); it overwhelms the one experiencing it to the point of fainting. "Prick of a thorn" (yushakuha): meaning it pierces him and enters his body. "Some of his sins" (min khatayahu): meaning some of his sins, because certain sins — such as the rights of others and major sins — are not expiated by this alone.

Illnesses and other afflictions that befall a believer — and which he bears with patience — are a means of purifying him from sins. A calamity accompanied by anxiety and restlessness becomes a double affliction: an affliction of the body and an affliction of losing the reward. The one who is restless may even incur sin if improper words or actions result from his impatience.
