Riyad Al Salihin

On the authority of Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "When Allah intends good for His servant, He hastens his punishment in this world. And when Allah intends evil for His servant, He withholds from him [the punishment for] his sin until he arrives with it on the Day of Resurrection." The Prophet (peace be upon him) also said: "The greatness of the reward is proportional to the greatness of the trial. And when Allah the Most High loves a people, He tests them. Whoever is content shall have [Allah's] pleasure, and whoever is discontent shall have [Allah's] displeasure." Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, who said: It is a good (hasan) hadith.

People are tested according to the level of their religious commitment. Patience upon afflictions and illnesses purifies one from sins. Among the signs that Allah loves a righteous servant is testing him in this world so that he meets Him on the Day of Resurrection purified of sins. A believer should be content with whatever trial he faces and should not despair or become discontented. Among the signs of the expiation of sins is patience upon affliction.
