Riyad Al Salihin

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "The believing man and woman continue to be afflicted in their person, their children, and their wealth until they meet Allah the Exalted with no sin remaining upon them." Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, who said: It is a good and authentic (hasan sahih) hadith.

The believer is subject to trials of various kinds. Glad tidings for the afflicted believer, as calamities serve as expiation for sins. True faith is manifested during calamities and hardships, for the weak in faith quickly falls into doubt and ill assumption about Allah at the slightest affliction, as is the condition of the hypocrites. Afflictions carry immense benefits; if the afflicted person knew them, calamities would become bearable and he would be content rather than resentful.
