عَنْ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ رضي اللّهُ عنه أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم كَانَ يَقُولُ: «اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْهُدَى وَالتُّقَى وَالْعفافَ والْغِنَى» رواه مسلم.
Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to say: "O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and self-sufficiency." Narrated by Muslim.
الشرح · explanation
أَسألُك الهدى: أي أطلب الهداية، وهنا بمعنى العلم. التقى: اسم جامع لفعل ما أمر اللّه به، وترك ما نهى عنه، والمراد هنا: تقوى اللّه عزَّ وجلَّ. العفاف: هو التنزُّه عما لا يُباح، والصيانة عن كل ما حرّم اللّه تعالى. الغنى: وهو غنى النفس عمّا في أيدي الناس بما أعطاه اللّه.
As'aluk al-huda: meaning I seek guidance, and here it carries the meaning of knowledge. Al-Tuqa: a comprehensive term for doing what Allah has commanded and leaving what He has prohibited; here it means piety toward Allah. Al-'Afaf: abstaining from what is not permissible, and safeguarding oneself from all that Allah the Exalted has forbidden. Al-Ghina: meaning self-sufficiency of the soul, being content with what Allah has given, independent of what others possess.

استحباب الخضوع إلى اللّه تعالى واللجوء إليه في جميع الأحوال. فضل هذه الصفات التي كان يسألها عليه الصلاة والسلام، وهو أعلم الناس باللّه وأخشاهم له.
It is recommended to humble oneself before Allah the Exalted and turn to Him in all circumstances. The excellence of these qualities which the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to ask for, and he was the most knowledgeable of people about Allah and the most fearful of Him.
