عَنْ أُمِّ المُؤمِنِينَ أُمِّ سلَمَةَ رضي اللّهُ عنها أنّ النبيَّ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم كانَ إذَا خَرجَ مِنْ بيْتِهِ قالَ: «بسم اللّهِ، توكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللّهِ، اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أعوذُ بِكَ أنْ أَضِلَّ أو أُضَلَّ، أَوْ أَزِلَّ أوْ أُزلَّ، أوْ أَظلِمَ أوْ أُظلَمَ، أوْ أَجْهَلَ أو يُجهَلَ عَلَيَّ» حديثٌ صحيحٌ رواه أبو داود والتِّرمذيُّ، وقال الترمذيّ: حديثٌ حسنٌ صحيحٌ، وهذا لَفظُ أبي داودَ.
On the authority of the Mother of the Believers, Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), that the Prophet (peace be upon him), whenever he left his house, would say: "In the name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from going astray or being led astray, from slipping or being caused to slip, from wronging others or being wronged, and from behaving ignorantly or being treated with ignorance." This is an authentic hadith narrated by Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi. Al-Tirmidhi said: It is a hasan sahih hadith, and this is the wording of Abu Dawud.

توكّلت على اللّه: اعتمدت عليه. أعوذ بك: ألجأ إليك وأعتصم بحولك. أَضِلّ: أَضِيع عن الحقّ فلا أهتدي إليه. أُضَلّ: يُضِلّني غيري. أَزِلّ: أَنزلِق في مهاوي المعاصي والباطل. أَجهَل: أقع في الخطأ والسفَه.
"I place my trust in Allah": I rely upon Him. "I seek refuge in You": I take shelter in You and hold fast to Your power. "Go astray": To lose the path of truth and fail to find guidance. "Be led astray": That someone else causes me to go astray. "Slip": To fall into the pitfalls of sin and falsehood. "Behave ignorantly": To fall into error and foolishness.

استحباب هذا الدعاء عند خروج المسلم من البيت، اقتداءً بالنبيّ صلّى اللّه عليه وسلّم، وتحصيلًا لِمَا فيه من خير، وتذكيرًا لنفسه، كي يجتهد في البعد عن الضلال والزلل والظلْم والجهل. الالتجاء إلى اللّهِ تعالى والاعتصام به في الحفظ من الانحراف، أو الخروج عن جادّة الحقّ.
It is recommended to recite this supplication when leaving the house, following the example of the Prophet (peace be upon him), to attain the goodness contained therein and to remind oneself to strive to keep away from misguidance, error, injustice, and ignorance. One should seek refuge in Allah the Most High and hold fast to Him for protection from deviation and straying from the path of truth.
